Preservatives

Thimerosol:
used for storing antibodies (and formerly for contact lenses too). For 100x stock make 2% solution (1g/50ml). Use at final of 0.01-02%. Harlow and Lane, Antibodies: A Laboratory Manual talks of using thimerosol (called merthiolate) at 0.01%.
ONE DRAWBACK: Thimerosol causes a false positive on at least the Coomassie Protein Assay, and possibly others. So, do not routinely add it to solutions. Maintain a 100x stock and add to columns, etc, after you have finished with them. However, don't use on Sephacryl columns (according to manufacturer.)

Sodium Azide:
used for preserving columns, PBS, antibodies, and the like. Inhibits horseradish peroxidase and also some cross-linking reactions so don't use in solutions that will end up with peroxidase reaction or if you want to do crosslinking later on. For 100x stock make 20% (200mg/ml). Use at final of 0.2%. I don't know if this causes false positives with Coomassie Assay or not.
