Writing a Philosophy Paper | ||
To link to the Main 323 Announcements Page To link to the assignment questions: Assignment Questions To link to a guide for making outlines: Outlines To link to Matt Zwolinski's Advice For good tips on writing a paper check this page from Colin Allen at Texas A& M http://grimpeur.tamu.edu/~colin/writing.html. Another excellent site comes from Ellen Watson at the University of Queensland, Australia: http://www.uq.oz.au/~pdgdunn/watessay.htm. Also from University of Queensland, there is a longer guide at http://www.uq.edu.au/philosophy/essays.html which may be valuable to you. This was written by William Gray. Another guide is by Martin Young and is found at http://eee.uci.edu/programs/philosowr/short.htm. He has both a long and a short version, this links to the short version. Our basic recommendation is start early, use the available resources (like Colin Allen's page, Ellen Watson's page, and what we provide you), and don't panic. If this is your first philosophy course, this may be a strange assignment to you at first. We will do what we can to help you succeed as long as you start early and ask. For basic writing rules, I highly recommend the following two short (truly) books: The Elements of Grammar by Margaret Shertzer The Elements of Style by William Strunk Jr and EB White. For a great book on learning to write effectively, try Peter Elbow's Writing with Power. A little longer, it fills a different spot from the other two. If you wish to take a look at these books before purchasing, come to my office hours or send me an email and I'll bring them to class. Phil 323 Hot Stuff |
